Founded in November 1985 and headquartered in North Carolina's Research Triangle, Tempest Environmental is a global leader in designing and building state-of-the-art equipment for water purification and conservation.
Dr. Roddy Tempest, a Chapel Hill entrepreneur and inventor, started the company on a park bench in New York City's Central Park. At the time, he was living in a Manhattan apartment with brown, slightly fishy smelling city water flowing from the tap. A trip to the hardware store to fix the problem had got him nowhere. As he sat on the park bench, he had an idea for a water filtration device.
He built the device. It turned his tap water clear, clean and sweet smelling and proved popular with neighbors and friends, who had also lucked out looking for a commercially available solution.
