The ground water below the Duke Energy Center in downtown Charlotte, N.C., is contaminated with heavy metals and volatile organic compounds, remnants of a nearby Civil War-era naval ordnance depot and environmental toxins from dry cleaners and gas stations that leached into the aquifer.Tempest Environmental designed and installed a system that cleans up to 32 million gallons of ground water annually to cool all of the center's 45 floors of offices and cut the building's demand for city water in half.
